“To prepare students with the necessary English proficiency skills to succeed in their chosen academic program at CFNI, and to train and equip students to share what they have learned about God’s truth in both their native tongue and English.”

  1. The IEP is for beginning proficiency (Level 1) English language learners who desire to gain the low intermediate proficiency (Level 2) that is needed to enter the mainstream courses at CFNI. Upon meeting the application requirements for CFNI you will receive a letter of acceptance from your chosen program.  If the IEP is required, your acceptance to that school will be deferred until you complete the English requirements.  Following the completion of IEP you will begin the program you were accepted into.

Upon arrival you will be given an English Assessment that will place you in one of three categories:

    1. Intensive English Program for students who are at level 1 (beginner) proficiency.  You will attend 15 hours of language instruction each week in the English classroom. In addition you will attend worship and Tuesday evening services with the whole student body. One or two semesters in the IEP are generally required depending on what proficiency the students assess at. Please note: A tuition or full scholarship may not be applied to the IEP program, therefore scholarship students are not eligible for IEP unless tuition and all fees are paid from students own funds.
    2. English as a Second Language Program for students who are at level 2 to level 4 (low intermediate to low advanced) proficiency. The student will go into regular courses at CFNI and then take ESL one evening per week.
    3. Waiver from all English requirements.  If you exceeds the standard required at CFNI for English you will not be required to take any English courses and will solely pursue your regular program courses.
  1. The IEP provides a foundation in English for CFNI students prior to their enrollment in the academic programs, thereby equipping them to participate and succeed as a bible student at CFNI.

    1. The program focuses on academic English in the core areas of reading, writing, listening, oral communication, grammar and pronunciation/phonics.
    2. Trained and experienced faculty provide academic as well as biblical teaching in basic English, in addition to vocabulary building, note-taking, and culture.
    3. The class sizes are on average 20 students and the students gain great friends during this intensive training period as they grow together in the language and in God.
    4. The environment is not only highly academic but also leaves room for fun in language learning.  Throughout the semester the IEP takes field trips around the Dallas/Fort Worth Area to destinations decided upon by the students.  In addition, the students take part in various outreaches to share God’s love in the local area.
  1. As the old saying goes “practice makes perfect.”  We believe this is a key part, yet desire to make a variety of tools available for the language learner to improve their English at a rapid rate.  Strategies for language learning are taught in each course so students can use them inside and outside of class.  Time in class is critical to learn the tools for language acquisition and students are strongly encouraged to put these tools into practice outside of the classroom.

    1. Students meet each day after worship to rigorously study the English language using cutting edge curriculum and God’s Word to grow in their language skills.
    2. The library computer lab is utilized to provide a variety of avenues for the students to improve their English skills via internet programs and faculty created exercises.
    3. Students are encouraged to use God’s Word and prayer as their foundation for learning the language.  Philippians 4:13 is a clear indicator of our ability when we walk with God.  “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength.”
    4. The English Tutor Student Ministry is made up of native English speakers who desire to serve the international students who are learning English.  Conversation buddies are provided to meet the needs of incoming international students whose first language is not English. Special times of language practice are provided for the IEP students to interact with the student ministers in small group sessions.  A variety of topics are discussed as well as homework assistance and times of prayer/encouragement.
    5. Private tutoring is also available as an extra cost elective and this tutoring is provided by the IEP faculty on a first come first serve basis.
  1. The Intensive English Program meets 15 hours per week in the classroom.  The classroom hours consist of intensive study in the areas of reading, academic/creative writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and phonics/pronunciation.  Classes run from 8:00 am -12:00 pm Monday through Friday. Morning chapel is required and begins at 8:00 each morning before classes. Students also select out of class time for conversation practice with native speakers who are part of the English Tutor Student Ministry.  Students spend an additional 4 hours per week in worship which is primarily in English.  The Tuesday Night Experience is a special lecture time that the students must attend each week where they will listen to native English speakers from all types of ministry including pastors, teachers, evangelists, etc.
  1. The courses offered for the Intensive English Program provide the ESL student with a wide range of learning opportunities in the core areas required for English fluency. This fluency will equip the student with basic English skills to function and to be successful in the regular programs at CFNI.

Reading:  Students are taught strategies for improving their reading speed and fluency.  Using the Bible and ESL texts the student is challenged to increase their vocabulary and comprehension through reading exercises.

Writing:  Guided instruction is provided in basic sentence writing followed by preparation for paragraph writing in the beginner section of the IEP.  More advanced techniques are taught such as creative writing and short essay composition in the high beginner section of IEP.

Listening:  A variety of voices are used to provide the student with ample opportunity to gain vital listening skills.  Strategies for effective listening are taught and the student is encouraged to apply these skills outside the classroom through homework exercises and interaction with native speakers. Students attend a Tuesday evening sermon to practice their skills in the real life classroom.

Oral Communication:  Relevant topics are used to allow students to practice their conversation skills in a comfortable environment where mistakes are expected as the learner improves their oral fluency.  Opportunities are given to share their personal testimonies with their peers as well as short and impromptu speeches to improve their comfort with speaking the language.

Grammar: Students are instructed in the forms of grammar along with the meaning in the correct context.  The students are then challenged to apply those forms in real life conversations and written exercises.

Phonics/Pronunciation: Students are introduced to the sounds of English beginning with vowels, moving onto consonants and blending of all the sounds.  Native speakers provide correct pronunciation for the students to mirror through repetition.
